Before you enter
Look beyond the signal. Is there enough space for your car to clear the junction? If the answer is no, wait before entering. The car ahead moving forward is not proof that there will be room for you as well. Keep crossing traffic's route open.
While the exit is blocked
The examiner assesses your observation, approach speed and response to the traffic situation and signals. Here, the useful decision is recognising the blocked exit before you're committed. You don't need to enter the junction to demonstrate that you've noticed a green light.
When space opens
Check the signal again, then check that your route is safe and you can clear the junction. Only then move. The light may have changed while you watched the queue. A gap beyond the junction and permission to proceed are two separate things. You need both, not whichever one appeared first.
Example: cars are queuing on the far side, with only half a car length available. Entering now would place you across the cycle track when your light changes. Remain before the line or crossing, keeping the route clear. If a sufficient space opens while the light is still permitting you to proceed, make a fresh check for cyclists and turning traffic before going.
What if you have already entered and traffic stops?
- Do not reverse into traffic behind you.
- Do not improvise a turn across another stream.
- Keep observing the space you occupy.
- Work towards a safe, lawful clearance when it becomes possible.
Mistakes to avoid
- Following the car ahead without checking the exit.
- Stopping on a cycle crossing or pedestrian path.
- Looking only at the bumper of the vehicle in front.
The legal reason not to enter
Under RVV 1990 Article 14, drivers must not block a junction. A green light does not remove that duty. The CBR Rijprocedure B also assesses how you read the situation ahead.
