Illustrated urban junction showing a white car continuing straight after a late navigation instruction to turn right.

It is just not a good one.

The route is not worth a late manoeuvre

Do not throw in a sharp lane change, sudden brake or last-second turn to save the instruction. Keep the car stable and continue safely if the requested route can no longer be taken normally.

Independent driving is still driving

Part of the practical exam uses navigation. The point is that you can continue driving independently while processing directions. Observation, speed, position, priority and the traffic around you still matter.

If you miss the route, the next safe decision matters more than performing a heroic recovery.

Reset the plan

Continue on the safe route available to you. Let the navigation recalculate or follow the examiner’s next instruction. If you did not understand what was said, ask for it to be repeated rather than guessing while your attention is split.

What to do when the instruction comes too late

  1. Keep the car stable. No sharp lane change, sudden brake or last-second turn.
  2. Continue safely if the requested route can no longer be taken normally.
  3. Ask for a repeat if you did not hear the direction. That is reasonable.
  4. Take the next safe opportunity and carry on.

When navigation and road signs disagree

A screen can tell you to turn into a street with a no-entry sign, or to take an exit from a lane marked for another direction. Road signs, signals and lane markings decide what you may do. Do not cross a solid line or enter a prohibited direction because the map suggests it. If you have passed the last safe moment to change lane, stay in your lane. Never expect a driver in the next lane to brake so you can follow the route.

Make three mistakes on purpose during training

Ask your instructor to set a destination, then deliberately take a legal wrong turn, miss a roundabout exit and continue past a motorway exit. Practise making a normal driving decision after each error. You should be able to explain which options were safe to take now, without making the road layout fit the navigation voice.

How to practise without learning one route

Drive to destinations you have never driven to. When the instruction changes, identify the permitted lanes first, check surrounding traffic second, and decide whether the route can still be taken calmly. Practise accepting a missed turn, including on roads where turning around is prohibited. See also a missed roundabout exit and lane changes. If instructions in another language are your problem, read the exam in English.
